Ill Manors broadcast platform: film trailer analysis

  1. What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?
Trailers are used to promote movies and tell the story in a short period of time without telling the audience to much. Most scenes put in the trailer are the most interesting and might not been shown in the order of the film. The trailer has to interring for the audience and have a built up so that the audience go and watch it.
Most movies would include the same codes and convention which are:
  • Title of the movie at the end so the audience knows what film to go watch
  • Institution information about who help fund and produced the movie
  • A montage of key events that happened in the movie to interest the audience to go watch the movie without giving any important information
  • Introduce the main character so that audience can follow the narrative. It also helps the audience how the main
  • Mostly dramatic camera shots and angle to integer the audience
  • Music is most likely to be used to help the video built up. Now a days most movies would have songs made for the movie such as Fast and Furious 7
  • A clear genre that the audience would have to pick up easily. This can be done from the lighting, editing or mise on scene
  • A release date of the movie at the ending so audiences would know when to go out and watch the movie
  • Voice over to strengthen the narrative
  • Dialogue, which is most likely be one liner that so they don't take to much time in the trailer
  1. How are trailers usually distributed
There are a couple of ways that movie trailer are distributed. One way could be showing them before another movie when people are watching it in the cinema. This would allow the audience to be aware of the movie. It would also depend on the type of movie it. If it is an independent movie, it is more likely to be advertised on the Internet as it is free. However, if it was mainstream films, it would be advertised on TV, products, interviews and more.
  1. How does the Ill Manors trailer use film trailer conventions?
The trailer includes a lot of the key conventions to make sure that the trailer is effective to the audience so those people watch it. It includes a montages from the film which isn't arrange in the movie order and includes the most exciting scene without having any spoilers. At the end of the trailer, it shows the tile, institutions and producers so the audience know who helped made the movie. It has a lot of camera movement to create realism.

  1. Watch the trailer carefully and discuss how it might attract an audience. Firstly, think about who the target audience for Ill Manors might include. Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?
As the trailer is very fast paced it wouldn't loose it audience as there is something interesting happening every 3 to 5 seconds. It is targeted at young adults that are interested in independent films. It would be towards people that have some sort of connect to the films narrative. However, it could also be for the total opposite audience and be for the middle to upper class. I say this because as the film could be an insight to the lives that they haven't experimented. It could also give them reason why the young people from these areas are so commonly in the news such as in the riots. It includes a lot of songs from Plan B (the director) that are parallel to the mise on scene. The juxtaposition of the clip at 47 seconds is very empowering as it shows the audience that a innocent baby has turned to someone that is excluded from society because of her environment. This has synergy with the text on screen that appears in the first couple of seconds. It shows us how she has grew up without being able to escape the circle of that society. At the beginning of the trailer, it had a very slow pace and introduced the main characters, afterwards, the paced change and became faster. It does have a voice over to describe what would happen in the movie. The first thing the voice over says is to get comfortable for the bumpy ride of this movie so the audience knows this isn't your typical bust-buster movie.As the trailer goes on, it has reviews from people with an establishing shot of London so the audience knows the location of the movie.
