The British film industry: institutional context

1) Find Media Factsheet #100 on the British film industry. Save it to USB or email it to yourself so you have access to the Factsheet for homework. You can find the Factsheet on the Media Shared drive - M:\Resources\A Level\Media Factsheets.

2) Read the whole of Factsheet #100 British film industry

3) What is the 'cultural test' to see if a film counts as British?
This is a test for producers to see if the movie they have made is British enough. It was introduced in 2007 and has to go through BFI for the UK Film tax relief.
4) Complete the task on the Factsheet, researching the films listed and finding out what they score on the cultural test: Sweeney, Attack The Block, The King's Speech, We Need To Talk About Kevin and Skyfall.

Sweeney                                       31/31
Attack the block                             31/31
The King's Speech                           30/31
We Need To Talk About Kevin           22/31
Sky fall                                          21/31

5) What is the main problem for the British film industry?
For the audience to see the film, the company has to sell the movie to a distributor. This means that the rights goes to the distributor. As a result, if the film makes money, most of the money will go to the distributors and not the producers. The don't get the money so they are less likely to make another film.
6) What are three of the strengths of the British film industry?
  • 5% of the box office goes to British ownership
  • create new up coming stars
  • great performance of British practitioner and their creative skills

7) What are the two options for the future of the British film industry?
The British film industry can collab with Hollywood to create amazing films. However, this could lead to more movie being made in the USA.
Or they can target the niche audience like before and make pure British films but not make as much money.

8) In your opinion, which of these two options would best safeguard the future of the British film industry?
As a safeguard, they should collab with Hollywood as they have more money to make better movies. It can also help them bring movies to the UK even if they were created in the US.
